JEE Main 2023 : The Joint Seat Allocation Authority ( JOSAA ) was established by the Ministry of Education to manage and regulate the seat allocation and admissions to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and 33 GFTIs via the Joint Admission Board (JAB) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). 

  • JOSAA Counseling helps students to secure admissions to Engineering/Architecture/ Planning programs based on their ranks obtained in JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams.

JOSAA Counseling 2022

  • JOSAA Counseling is done to fill more than 50,000 seats in engineering, architecture, and planning degree programs at IITs,NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and IIEST across the country.
  • JOSAA Counseling is done in 6 rounds and based on the cut-off marks secured by the students in JEE Main exam they will be able to secure their seats in one of the academic institutions.
  • Seat distribution is based on the 10 separate categories assigned to candidates, which include Open,General Economically weaker sections, Other Backward Classes-Non Creamy layer, SC,ST, Open  -PwD (person with disability), Gen-EWS-PwD,OBC-NCL-PwD, SC-PwD, and ST-Pwd.

What is the eligibility criteria for JOSAA Counseling?

  • Candidates for IIT academic and preparatory programmes should have passed the JEE Advanced exam. 
  • Candidates must have secured a  rank in the JEE Main exam to gain admission to NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs, and they must have passed the +2 exam with Physics, Math, and Chemistry, Biology, and Biotechnology as optional courses. 
  • Applicants from the general category must have received an overall score of at least 75% to be eligible for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, while candidates from the reserved category must have received an overall score of 65%. 
  • Candidates must also have met the JEE Main cutoff requirements.
  • In addition, if the candidate ranks in the top 20% of their separate boards, they will be considered for admission.

What is a rank list in JOSAA Counseling?

  • JOSAA will publish a rank list on its official website based on the results received by applicants in the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams.
  • A rank list will be created for the ten distinct categories that we mentioned earlier.
  • There will be a common rank list, category rankings, and ranks for those with disabilities. 
  • Additionally, keep in mind that gender-neutral and female-only candidates have unique opening and closing ranks.
    • A common rank list is a list in which all applicants are awarded a rank based on their JEE main results. 
    • The next set of rank lists will be based on groups such as EWS (Economically Weaker Section), SC, ST, OBC, and a similar set of categories for people with disabilities.
    • The students must have obtained at least 2.5% in each of the three disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics), as well as at least 8.75% in the JEE Advanced exam to be included in the rank list for admission to IITs. For each category tag the minimum marks in individual subjects and minimum percentage of aggregate marks will differ.

What is the Opening and Closing Rank in JOSAA?

  • The opening rank is the rank at which the institute begins admission, while the closing rank is the rank after which the institute does not accept the admission.

What are tie-breaker rules in JOSAA?

  • The tie-breaking rules was not applicable in JOSAA 2022 Counseling and the rank list provided by JEE Apex Board was used without any changes. 
  • If two or more candidates secured the same rank and are from the same category and if the seats that the candidates are looking for are filled then admission to those candidates was approved by increasing the number of seats for that particular rank.

JOSAA Counseling -Overview and Steps required to participate in the counseling process

  • Overview of JOSAA Counseling : 
    • Candidates those who qualify JEE Main 2023 and JEE Advanced 2023 are eligible to participate in the JOSAA Counseling.
    • The next step is to visit the official website www.josaa.nic.in and complete the registration process and select the preferred course and colleges, follow the steps given below to complete the online registration process.
    • A mock seat allotment round will be held to give students an opportunity to understand the whole process of JOSAA Counseling.
    • Following the mock seat allotment process the seat allotment begins and once the candidate is assigned a seat then they have to upload the necessary documents (Check here for list of documents) and pay the required fee.

JOSAA Counseling Procedure

  • Registration - Students who have cleared the JEE Main exam 2023 can use their same login credentials to register on the JOSAAs official website and fill in the required information after login. Below is the sample image of the online registration page for JOSAA 2022.

  • Step 2: Filling Out Choices -In this step, candidates must prepare a list of the courses and colleges to which they want to be admitted. The options will be displayed based on the students rank and scores, select from the choices and prioritize the list. 
  • Step 3: Locking the selections - After completing step 2 , the candidates must lock their choices and save the details for future reference. Once the choices are locked the official authorities will conduct a mock seat allotment round to help students to understand the counseling process and  give them an approximation of their chances of getting admission into their desired college.
  • Step 4- Seat allotment - After the mock seat allotment, the final JOSAA Counseling will begin where candidates will be assigned seats in each round of counseling based on their JEE Main All India Rank and the courses and colleges they had selected in the previous step. Some additional choices that will be provided to candidates during each round of counseling are 
    • FREEZE- If the candidate is satisfied with the assigned academic programme, he or she should select Freeze, which means that the student will not be able to participate in subsequent rounds of counseling and that the chosen seat will be assigned to them.
    • FLOAT-If a student selects the Float option, it signifies that they accept the seat provided to their desired degree programme but are still open to further rounds of counseling to see if they are offered admission to an academic programme at any other institute of their choice. In addition, the student will be considered for future rounds of counseling. 
    • SLIDE - Once a candidate has accepted the admission they can select the slide option and wait to see if admission to a higher academic program in the same institute is offered to them in the subsequent rounds of counseling they can select that course. 

It is important to note that slide and float choices are only accessible to individuals who are NOT awarded admission to their first choice.Also make a note that Slide and float options will not be available in the final round of JOSAA Counseling.

  • Step 5- Seat acceptance fee payment and Verification of Documents -
    • Candidates will be notified on their registered email address and phone number about the confirmation of their seat allotment and then they will be required to pay the seat acceptance fee. 
    • For candidates belonging to SC, ST, Gen-PwD, Gen-EWS-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, and SC/ST-PwD categories will have to pay INR 15,000 and candidates belonging to other categories will have to pay INR 35,000
    • Seat acceptance fee can be paid online via Net Banking, UPI, Debit card, Credit card. 
    • Next step is to upload the required documents in the online portal and these are the list of documents: 
      • Class 12 the marksheet
      • Class 10 marksheet
      • Category certificate 
      • Person with Disabilities must upload appropriate documentation 
      • Medical certificate 
      • JEE Main admit card
      • OCI/PIO card if applicable.
      • Once these documents are uploaded they will be verified by the concerned authorities and if any details are missing they will reach out to the candidates and it is the responsibility of the candidates to submit the required documents within the time frame specified.
    • Step 6- Complete the administrative process by reporting to the allocated college
      • Students must formally report to their allocated colleges and pay the remaining fees and complete the admission formalities.
      • Candidates should also have a paper copy of their documents that were uploaded in the online portal and in addition to those should carry these documents

Seat matrix

  • JOSAA counseling will allocate around 50,000 plus seats across various universities in India based on the category and the ranks secured by the students.
  • Based on 2022 data, we have compiled an estimate for 2023 on how many seats would be available for counseling for different categories.
  • Seat matrix helps to evaluate how many seats would be available for a preferred course in different universities based on which category the candidates come under.
  • Students should be aware that there will be 2 seat pools, one for Gender-Neutral  students and one for Female students only.
  • Female candidates are eligible for seats in both pools, whereas all non-female candidates will only be eligible for seats distributed under the Gender-Neutral pool.

Steps to withdraw from JOSAA Counseling

  • Students should also be aware that the option to withdraw is accessible throughout the counseling process, and that the regulations for withdrawal in the admission to IITs and NITs varies slightly.
  • If a student has accepted a seat at IIT, they can withdraw by reporting on the online portal, and the withdrawal option will be available from the 2nd  to 5th round of seat allocation. 
  • And if a student is allocated a seat in NIT colleges then they have the option to withdraw their seat till the 6th round of counseling.
  • Steps to initiate the withdrawal process are 
    • Login to JoSAA portal and  submit the duly signed declaration form. Click here to download the declaration form. 
    • OTP will be sent to a registered mobile number which should be used by the candidate to confirm the withdrawal process.
    • Candidates can check the approved/rejected status of the withdrawal request in the portal. If the request is rejected then the candidate can submit the request again with proper documentation. 
    • The initial seat acceptance fee will be refunded deducting the processing fee. 

CSAB Counseling 2023

  • Central Seat Allocation Board Counseling -CSAB Counseling is conducted to fill any vacant seats for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs that are remaining after 6 rounds of JOSAA Counseling.
  • Candidates should remember that CSAB counseling does not fill seats for IITs.
  • CSAB counseling is done for 3 separate channels and those are
    • CSAB NEUT (North Eastern States and Union Territories)
    • CSAB UT- Supernumerary seats in the Union territories
    • CSAB SFTI- Self-financed technical institutes.
  • CSAB NEUT - Counseling process is done to fill seats for candidates belonging to 12 Northeastern states and union territories.
  • 12 Northeastern states include Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar Island, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Lakshadweep, Daman, and Diu.
  • Eligibility criteria for CSAB NEUT is that the candidates should be from any one of the Northeastern state or union territory and should have valid JEE Main exam scores.
  • CSAB UT - Counseling is done to fill seats for candidates belong to union territories and those include Andaman and Nicobar, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Diu and Daman, Lakshadweep and Khandvi.
  • CSAB SFTI - Counseling is done to fill seats for candidates into Self-financed technical institutes.
