JEE Exam Main Exam Pattern

  • JEE Main 2023 exam pattern details will be released in the official website at jeemain.nta.nic.in. Follow this article to know more about the exam pattern for Paper 1 and paper 2, total marks, number of questions, marking scheme and other details. 
  • JEE Main exam will be conducted for admission to engineering,architecture and planning programmes. Candidates will appear for 2 different papers they are: 
    • Paper 1-for securing admission to engineering programme
    • Paper 2A- for admission to architecture degree programme
    • Paper 2B- for admission to the planning degree programme.

JEE Main exam 2023 Paper 1

  • JEE Main exam paper 1 will be a multiple choice question and questions will be from 3 subjects and they are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry. The total number of questions in the paper will be 90 out of which candidates will have to answer 75 in total. 
  • Each subject will have 2 sections A and B. For section A, candidates will have to attempt 20 questions and in Section B 10 questions will be asked and they will have to attempt 5 questions.
  • The total marks one can secure in Paper 1 is 300 where the marking scheme includes +4 marks for each correct answer, -1 for incorrect answers and no marking for unanswered questions.

JEE Main exam 2023 Paper 2A

  • JEE Main exam paper 2 will include multiple choice questions and a drawing test. There will be 3 parts.
  • In Part 1- questions will be from Mathematics subject and candidates will have to attempt 20 questions from section A and 5 from section B and maximum marks that can be scored from this part will be 100.
  • Part 2 will be aptitude sections where candidates will have to attempt 50 questions and maximum marks to score from this part will be 200.
  • Part 3 will be a drawing test where 2 questions have to be answered and maximum marks that can be scored in this part will be 100.
  • The total marks for Paper 2A is 400.  

JEE Main exam 2023 Paper 2B

  • JEE Main exam paper 2B will include multiple choice questions and is split across 3 parts.
  • In Part 1 questions will be from Mathematics and candidates will have to attempt 20 questions from Section A and 5 from Section B and maximum marks to score from this section will be 100.
  • Part 2 will be an aptitude section where candidates will have to attempt 50 questions and maximum marks to score from this part will be 200.
  • Part 3  will be a multiple choice section where candidates will have to answer 25 questions in total and can score a maximum of 100 marks.
  • The total marks for Paper 2B is 400.

Languages in which candidates can appear for JEE main 2023 exam

  • Candidates who appeared for JEE Main 2022 were given a choice to attempt the exam in one of the following 13 languages and here is a table with the choice of medium of question papers in different exam centers in India.
  • For JEE Main 2023, there is a high chance that candidates will be given the same number of choices of languages to attempt the exam.

Mock Test - Step 1

  • Follow these steps below to practice the online mock test for JEE main exam and other details

Step 1 - Visit the official website www.nta.ac.in/Quiz  and select a mock test.

  • It will lead to the web page with a video about the mock test instructions along with a drop down menu to choose the exam that the candidate likes to appear and also the various question papers to practice. Candidates need to choose the JEE Main option and select one paper for attempting the mock test.

Mock Test - Step 3

  • After the login the candidate will be able to see detailed instructions for the examination. Candidates should go through these instructions before starting the test. The instructions window will appear as shown below.

Instructions for candidates attempting Mock test

  • When the candidate clicks "I Agree" the test will automatically begin and the clock for the exam session will start. The countdown timer displayed on the right corner of the screen will display the time remaining for the candidate to complete the examination .
  • The question palette on the right side of the screen will be displaying the status of each question with the above mentioned colors, so that the candidate can go and view and review questions at the end of the exam.
  • When a candidate answers a question , they should click the Save and Next button.    
  • Candidates must do all their calculations/ writing work in the rough sheets provided.
  • Once the timer reaches zero the exam will end automatically .
  • Once the candidate clicks "Proceed" after going through the instructions, the JEE Main mock test will begin.
  • The question palette will display the status of each question, the time remaining to complete the test will be displayed on the top.

Steps to book slot for attempting JEE Main mock test

  • Candidates can visit the official website for Registration as a candidate for Test Practise Center and click on Student Registration
  • Next step is to select a login method to register.
  • Once the login is complete then the candidate should enter the following details

            1. Personal information

            2. Contact information

            3. Academic information

            4. Exam information

  • Next step the candidate should select an exam center from the available options displayed. They should select 5 exam centers according to their preference.
  • Next is to schedule a session from 6 given options.
  • Once all these selections are complete the candidate can review it and confirm  their appointment to attend the mock test.
  • Candidates will receive a confirmation SMS in their registered mobile number which can be used as an entry pass at the exam center.
  • Candidates can download the NTA app from playstore and complete the above mentioned steps to book a slot for practicing JEE Main mock test.

  • NTA has developed an app called "National Test Abhyas" useful for students aspiring to attempt the JEE Main exam to practise mock tests.
  • The app is free of cost to download.
  • Candidates can either practise mock tests directly or download it and practise later as per their convenience.
  • The app provides real time personalized reports, personalized feedback, and helps in building strategy for students to attempt questions in a quick manner.

JEE Mains Exam pattern FAQs

  • The Question paper has been divided into 2 sections. There will be 90 questions in Paper 1 and candidates will be required to answer 75 questions only. There will be no negative marking for 15 optional questions. Paper wise details are as follows :
  • Paper 1- Each subject will have 2 sections. Section A will be of Multiple choice questions(MCQs) and Section B will contain Questions whose answers are to be filled in as a numerical value. In section B, candidates will have to attempt any 5 questions out of 10.

Paper 2A and 2B- Part 1 will have 2 sections. Section A will be Multiple choice questions and Section B will contain questions whose answers are to be filled in as numerical value.
