What is Normalization of scores

JEE Main exams will be conducted in 2 sessions and this results in a lot of discrepancies over the final scores of the exam. In order to avoid this normalization of scores is done. Raw scores of the candidates are converted into percentiles using the below mentioned formula and this percentiles is utilized for assigning the All India rank.

The JEE Main percentile score of a candidate indicates the number of candidates who scored the same or lower in the exam.

How to Calculate the Percentile using the formulas

Percentiles will be calculated for each session and also individual subjects and these are the formulas used:

TP1 is the percentile score of the total raw score of the candidates

  • TP1 = 100 x (No.of candidates appeared from the session with raw score EQUAL TO OR LESS than T1 score) (Total number of candidates appeared for the session)

Formula for Calculating Mathematics Percentile

  • M1P = 100 x (No.of candidates appeared from the session with raw score EQUAL TO OR LESS than M1 score in Mathematics) (Total number of candidates appeared for the session)

Formula for Calculating Physics Percentile

  • P1P = 100 x (No.of candidates appeared from the session with raw score EQUAL TO OR LESS than P1 score in Physics) (Total number of candidates appeared for the session)

Formula for Calculating Chemistry Percentile

  • C1P= 100 x (No.of candidates appeared from the session with raw score EQUAL TO OR LESS than C1 score in Chemistry) (Total number of candidates appeared for the session)

What is the use of calculating the percentiles for the JEE Main exam? And Tie breaking rules

  • When 2 or more candidates score the same percentiles , the problem of assigning ranks becomes a tough situation.
  • In order to ease the situation some rules are used using the percentiles to assign ranks to candidates
  • Tie breaking rules for JEE Main exam are :
    • In a tie, the candidate with the highest NTA Mathematics score will be ranked higher.
    • If a tie persists the student with the higher NTA Physics score will be given a higher rank.
    • If a tie persists then the candidate with a higher NTA Chemistry score will be assigned a higher rank.
    • Still the situation is same then those with less erroneous answers in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry will be given higher rank.
    • If the tie scores cannot be broken even after the above situations then the candidates older in age will be given the higher rank.

JEE Main exam Raw score vs Percentile

  • The score obtained by the candidate in JEE Main exam is called raw score which is used for calculating the percentiles using these formulas.
  • Using these percentiles NTA assigns ranks which helps students to proceed further to securing admission into IITs, NITs and IIITs through JOSAA Counseling.
  • Here is a table that shows the raw scores and corresponding percentiles obtained by students in 2021. Candidates can check the previous year trend to know approximately what will be the percentiles for JEE Main 2022 or use our online calculator to check out the probable rank for their raw scores secured in JEE Main 2022 exam.
