IIT Madras has the Central Library that provides information services and access to bibliographic and full-text digital and printed resources for students and research scholars. It is a five-story air-conditioned and Wi-Fi-enabled facility that contains many resources such as CD-ROMs, online databases, audio-video cassettes, books, e-journals, patents, and e-standards, theses, reports, monographs, full-text and bibliographical databases, etc.
As IIT Madras is a residential institution that has 20 hostels named after the mighty rivers of India, of which five are allotted for girls and the remaining 15 are allocated for boys. It has single/double/triple occupancy style rooms where first-year students would stay in double rooms, however, in subsequent years, they would be housed any of the rooms depending on the hostels, whereas, PG graduates are accommodated in single rooms, and all the rooms have the Internet and Local Area Network (LAN) connections.
IIT Madras has playgrounds and facilities for sports and athletics which comprises a center for cricketing excellence, a world-class swimming pool, an athletic stadium, four tennis courts and badminton courts, hockey and football fields with floodlight, two basketball courts and volleyball courts, a well-equipped gymnasium with professional instructors, two world-class squash courts, weightlifting arena, table tennis facility, and a skating rink.
Since IIT Madras is the premier central government institution receiving a considerable amount of funds for research and development, it has world-class labs consisting of advanced equipment such as Advance Laser Material Processing, FTIR, Jet Test Facility, etc., in every department. Even IIT Madras develops remotely operable Local Electrode Atom Probe (LEAP) along with other eight top institutions in India to view atoms in the metals.
IIT Madras has two banks, SBI and Canara Banks, with regular branches, and each bank has two ATM centers. In addition to this, an ICICI Bank ATM is also available for the benefit of students and staff. Besides these, it has a post office and a telegram office with a separate postal zone which helps them to call distant places and receive telegrams. Moreover, it has two shopping complexes that have all the commodities from general supplies and groceries to a bakery and saloon.
