The Indian government has named the university an "Institute of National Importance," and the AICTE has given it its seal of approval. It is a public university. The Ministry of Human Resource Department (MHRD) has named 19 IIITs "Institutes of National Importance." IIIT Allahabad is one of those 19 IIITs. The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Allahabad was founded in 1999. It is one of the 25 Indian Institutes of Information Technology that have been named by India's Ministry of Education. It is called an Institute of National Importance. M. D. Tiwari was the first director of the institute. He stayed in that position until December 2013, when the Allahabad High Court made him quit after rejecting Tiwari's appeal against the chancellor's order. From 2008 to 2014, IIIT-A held seven science conclaves. Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, Douglas D. Osheroff, and Ivan Giaever were among the Nobel laureates who attended. According to NIRF 2022, the institute is now ranked 87th among the top engineering colleges in the nation.
